THE SHMA PIECES |
These pieces, which contain the opening verse to the Shma, proclaiming the unity
of God and indeed the universe, are very large pieces, over a meter and a half
tall. The experiment here was to do the piece in two different color schemes - one "male" and the other female, intentionally invoking stereoptypical color associations. The purpose of this was to see whether the words are perceived differently when perceived as coming from a male source or female source. Of course these gender images of God are in themselves forms of idolatry worth ridding oneself of. |
